What is Systems Science?

Officially, Systems Science is the interdisciplinary field that studies the nature of systems—from simple to complex—in nature, society, cognition, engineering, technology, and science itself. To systems scientists, the world can be understood as a system of systems.

The current science we use in healthcare is Reductionism, but CQInsights believes Systems Science is a completely new scientific paradigm that needs to be applied to the global healthcare system. See the chart below to understand the differences between Reductionist Science and Systems Science:

Only through Systems Science will healthcare be able to truly identify which medical interventions and treatments may benefit a patient, create waste within the system, or may contribute to unintended harm. It’s also important to note that one medical intervention or treatment can fall under all of those categories depending on which patient subpopulation is being treated.

In order for our global healthcare system to finally be sustainable, Systems Science must be implemented and paired with Clinical Quality Improvement (CQI) to lower costs and improve outcomes.

What is Clinical Quality Improvement (CQI)?

Clinical Quality Improvement (CQI) is an approach rooted in patient-centered care that can be used by any healthcare institution to attempt to improve their everyday practices and patient care. In order to understand and evaluate value within an organization, CQI goes hand-in-hand with value-based care. CQInsights believes the following equation to be the true measure of value:

It’s important to note that cost may be the most important factor in this equation. Until true costs are considered in conjunction with all other healthcare measures, the global healthcare system remains unsustainable and actual value cannot be assessed.

What does a CQI Initiative look like with CQInsights?

A small, focused clinical team gets together to discuss a whole, definable patient process, including what real-world data they should collect in order to measure the value of their care. This process is repeated to optimize the value for the organization, the clinical team, and most importantly, the patient.

Value can also be measured for any drug, device, or diagnostic tool being used within that whole, definable patient process. CQInsights specializes in bringing industry partners to the table during CQI initiatives.
